We use a number of approaches across a wide range of issues, working with journalists, communities and policy-makers
"What should I attend to first - empty stomachs, bare feet, tattered clothes, or the school?"
At Manchar Lake in Pakistan we helped fishing communities, whose livelihoods had been destroyed by a government drainage project, to collect the testimonies of local people. Community members organised a people's assembly where they invited policymakers and the media to hear these accounts. The assembly attracted national coverage and drew attention to the plight of the communities for the first time.
"We have to learn that poverty is real. It is not about statistics. It is about people, living, walking and surviving."
Working closely with the global Panos Network we support developing-country journalists to attend and report from key international summits. We provide editorial support and mentoring, and brief journalists on the complex issues under discussion. In this way, we encourage them to make connections between summit proceedings and the lives of the majority of people in their country.
"If we want a media which covers HIV responsibly and effectively, there is no substitute for community action and involvement."
African migrants in the UK account for the greatest number of new diagnoses of HIV in recent years. Being HIV positive can intensify experiences of stigma and marginalisation. Through our analysis of the UK press, dialogue meetings and training sessions, we have encouraged members of African migrant communities to speak out, engage with the media, and confront the discrimination they face.
