20 November 2009
Honduran Temporary President Roberto Micheletti has announced he will step down from power for the days surrounding the upcoming presidential elections. The elections are scheduled to begin on the November 29. Micheletti will step down between November 24 and December 2 but resume power "if peace is threatened". Micheletti said his resignation would allow Hondurans to focus on the election and not the political crisis. The country was plunged into a political crisis when Jose Manuel Zelaya was ousted as president in June 2009. Zelaya called Micheletti's move a "fake resignation". Zelaya called for a new solution and for the presidential elections to be postponed until the political crisis is resolved.
