China accused of stepping up US cyber-spying

20 November 2009

Chinese espionage is becoming more sophisticated and intense according to a report by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. The US advisory panel on US-China relations urged the US Congress to ensure that the country protects itself from Chinese spying. Senior military officer, Col Gary McAlum, told the Commission that the US defence department detected a 20 per cent rise in malicious cyber incidents compared to last year. He said not all of the cyber attacks were from China, but China was the largest culprit. However, Wang Baodong, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said the spying allegations were "baseless, unwarranted and irresponsible". He said the suggestion that China's navy was building up to challenge the US in the Pacific was a "Cold War fantasy".
