Taiwanese isle goes green

20 November 2009

Liuqui, a tiny tropical island off Taiwan, is banning all petrol-powered cars, buses and scooters in a bid to go green. Over the next three years Pingtung county in Southern Taiwan plans to spend between 9.3 million and 15.5 million US dollars on replacing petrol powered vehicles with electric ones. Electric scooters will be available to the 300,000 tourists who visit Luiqui. County leaders have already offered subsidies and arranged 400 electric scooters for the islands 12,000 inhabitants. The county officials hope to extend the ban on gasoline powered vehicles to other parts of Pingtung, which is badly affected by smog. Taiwanese official Chung Chia-pin told Reuters Luiqui would be the first island in Asia without traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
