The Knight International Journalism Fellowships programme makes tangible changes that improve the quality and free flow of news in the public interest around the world. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the year-long program sends international media professionals to countries where there are opportunities to promote reliable, insightful journalism that holds officials accountable. Knight International Fellows should have at least 10 years' experience in journalism or related fields and work in these key regions: Asia/Pacific, Eurasia/Former Soviet Union, Latin America, Middle East/North Africa, and Sub-Saharan African. Fellowships are announced in the programme's website as they open.

The Priority Grant Competition is offered by the United States Institute of Peace to support nonprofit organizations working in or on Afghanistan, Colombia, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sudan. It awards the most innovative peacebuilding projects involving research, the identification of promising models and effective practices, the development of practitioner resources and tools, the development and delivery of education, training and dialogue programs, and the production of films, radio programs and other media. American and foreign individuals and nonprofit organizations may apply. Individuals whose proposals are funded will be required to identify a nonprofit organization to receive and manage the grant monies. There is no deadline for submitting an application.

The International Fellowships Programme (IFP) provides opportunities for advanced study to individuals who will use this education to become leaders in their respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. The fellowship provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level study leading to a masters or doctoral degree. To ensure that fellows are drawn from more diverse backgrounds than ever before, IFP will actively recruit candidates from social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education. Opportunities for advanced study are offered for residents from Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam.

The Open Society Institute (OSI) fellowship programme supports idea entrepreneurs from around the world. The Open Society Fellowship enables professionals, including journalists, activists, scholars, and practitioners, to work on projects that inspire meaningful public debate, shape public policy, and generate intellectual ferment within OSI. The fellowship focuses on four areas: 'National Security and the Open Society'; 'Citizenship, Membership and Marginalisation'; 'Strategies and Tools for Advocacy and Citizen Engagement'; and 'Understanding Authoritarianism'. Fellows' projects may include books, articles, outreach for documentary films, online media, and efforts to seed new campaigns and organisations.

The Journalist to Journalist Project of the National Press Foundation and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) are offering fellowships to a three-day journalist training program on lung health issues (tuberculosis, asthma, childhood pneumonia, COPD, tobacco control, and TB/HIV co-infection) and the 41st Union World Conference on Lung Health in Berlin, Germany. The program will run from 11 to 15 November 2010. A cover letter, narrative biography, and letter of support should be saved as either a text or PDF document before beginning the online application form.

The Alter-Ciné Foundation offers a yearly grant to young film and video makers born and living in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to direct a documentary film on the theme of rights and freedoms, including social and economic rights, women's rights, the right to culture, and artistic creation. The Foundation will award a grant of 10,000 Canadian dollars to a video or filmmaker to assist in the production of a documentary project. The grant is aimed at young video and filmmakers who want to direct a film in the language of their choice that respects the aims of the Foundation.The Foundation particularly supports documentary films that, as stated on their website, "dare to go against the tide, that take the side of the defenceless and question common assumptions by giving a voice to the voiceless, enriching our understanding of the world and helping us reflect on the possibility of changing the world from a perspective of peace, justice, equality and respect for differences".

Through the Lorenzo Natali Prize, the European Commission recognises journalists who contribute to the cause of development, democracy and human rights. The Natali Prize is an international prize awarded each year since 1992 to the best journalistic work on development, democracy and human rights. It is open to journalists working in TV, radio, the press and online. In 2009 more than 1,000 journalists from 130 countries took part. Prizes worth a total of €60,000 will be awarded to 17 journalists in the different sections: Africa, Europe, Arab World/Middle East, Asia and Latin America/Caribbean.
