Cities of the future

Dream or nightmare?

June 1999

At the beginning of the 21st century, over half of the world's population will be living in an urban environment - and that number will continue to rise over the next few decades.

Most of this new urban growth will take place in Africa and Asia and many governments seem unprepared for the challenges that this will bring.

This report looks at the debates around urbanisation and strategies for ensuring that cities work for and not against people, examining the role of international organisations in achieving this.
