New approaches to safe motherhood

December 2001

More than 525,000 women die every year from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. This is one of the most stark indicators of the widening gap between rich and poor

This report looks at the factors behind maternal mortality and the barriers to women’s access to care.

The latest target of the International Safe Motherhood Initiative is a 75 per cent reduction in deaths from 1990 levels by 2015. This report argues that the target is achievable by changes to the laws and policies that constrain women's choices and improved health provision.
